COMPOSER

We Outran the Sun (song cycle)

Equal parts concert and documentary, We Outran the Sun is a song cycle and multimedia piece for the theater.  The songs are portraits, musical representations of individual people in the artist's life.  Created in collaboration with the filmmaker Michael Heck, each song is preceded by an edited interview with the subject of the song, creating companion visual and musical portraits.  The work takes inspiration from the friendship of Chuck Close and Philip Glass, and the music of Sufjan Stevens. Performed at the piano and laptop computer, We Outran the Sun expands the definition of a portrait, exploring what it means for artists to create deeply personal work for and about their friends.
